All junior leagues end for the season
A day of sorrow – another season is canceled
On 18 December 2020, the Swedish government recommended that all sports facilities, ice rink and unnecessary activities (apart from business leagues) be closed until 24 January in order to reduce the spread of infection due to Covid-19.
But already today, January 8, the press release came from the Swedish Ice Hockey Association that they choose to end all junior seasons for 2020/2021. directly instead of waiting for a new message from the government.
The decision was made when it is considered that it is not possible to ensure any sporting fairness or establish a ranking of teams due to too few games played.
Of course, today’s board decision was sad for us to make, but given the situation and the conditions, it is unfortunately necessary. We sincerely hope that the broad ice hockey that now stands still can soon return to training and match play.Anders Larsson, Chairman of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association
Two interrupted seasons that could damage the future regarding Swedish hockey
Last season ended just before the playoffs started. At least then the players got the chance to perform for most of the season. This year, it hardly feels like the series had time to settle before the recommendations from the government to pause all youth sports due to reducing the spread of Covid-19.
Therefore, it is the last two years’ junior groups that have not had the full chance to develop as hockey players. Last year it was players born in 2000 and this year it was players born in 2001 who did their last years as juniors. Perhaps the most important year for their future hockey careers!
Nobody knows what the future will look like. But, that Sweden has not performed as desired in recent years when it comes to international tournaments is a fact. Right now, interrupted junior seasons for two years in a row do not feel like helping Sweden to take steps upwards towards future junior successes. Unfortunately.
